Beef

If you’ve lived in the US, you will quickly notice that beef in the UK has a different flavor. The short answer is that the cattle in UK are grass fed and generally contain less artificial hormones. Not to worry though, there are a few places where you can get your steak or burger fix.

Bar Boulud (London)

Finding a proper* burger has been a challenge, but increasingly an easier one.  Among the first good burgers was in a restaurant located within the Mandarin Hotel. Though we had already ordered our entrees, after seeing plates of burgers going by, we couldn’t resist and ordered one for ourselves. Entrees are on the modest-expensive side, but worth it. Indeed, one of the best burgers in London is within a French restaurant with New York ties.

Cau (Multiple)

If you want a quiet adult dinner and drinks with kids in tow, this Buenos Aires inspired restaurant does the trick. At the Guildford location once seated, your kids are given an iPhone in an oversized case. Among the small plates are their must-order empanadas. They also serve bigger plates and flavorful steaks (if you are really hungry there is also a 440g filet of rump). I also tried my first salta clericot (white wine with passion fruit puree and basil leaves).  It is similar to white sangria, and old by the glass or jug — I’d go back just for this!

Hawksmoor (Multiple)

The beef in their Sunday roast is listed by cut and weight, with an assort-ment of sides (mac 'n' cheese, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach).  Be sure to leave room for yummy desserts like Knickerbocker Glory*, Peanut Butter Shortbread, and Raspberry Eaton Mess* to name a few. They also serve a reasonably priced express two- and three-course menu before 6:30 pm or after 10 pm Monday-Saturday.
